Hi Warren, I expect you are correct...Modern Engineering...complete metal construction...not the old way with cloth....Ha..
In truth, as I see it, the metal STC's at .020 thickness creates problems
in
that a little hail will create lots of dents....I don't know the thickness
of
the Factory metal, however, so it may be thicker and not dent so bad..
I considered covering mine with metal, when I restored her. After
researching, I found these potential problems:
*Increases empty weight ... about 35 pounds or so.
*The hail dent problem - as my coupe sits outdoors.
*Increased condensation inside the winds potential, potential of
more
corrosion.
*Increased potential "oil can" noise in turburlance.
*Limits the 20 year ability to re-inspect the inside of the wing
structure.
But, it is probably stronger than a rag wing...However,I accepted the
figures that the coupe strength was already in excess of that required for
Normal Catagory. ...some folks state the wings and center section are
stronger that a Bonanza --- I really don't know.....but the wings are very
strong with Warren Truss construction.
I wonder if anyone has done a structural load failure test on Ercoupe
Wings,
or is it all theory....?
So, I put Stitts back on mine.
