I heard the argument very often Tim. 'If the need arises' will kill you
like so many. I too wanted an artificial when I got my Coupe. My
instructor told my not to ' makes you more fly in the clouds than stay
out'.
So I kept what I had. Maynard from Truckee ones told me that if a gyro I
should get an directional one.
He was drawing out the importance of flying straight when in low
visibility like clouds and fog, more important than a horizontal gyro,
which "will bounce from one side to the other in clouds anyway".
He knows what he's talking about. If you are open to listen to a good
advice, leave the vertical speed (much more sensitive device) in and a
turn and bank and fly the plane always so that you never need more than
that.
I was in several hairy situations and I can tell you when the panic factor
gets you, your instruments are worthless, unless you are trained. And as a
VFR only Pilot you are definitely not trained.

If you on the other hand intend to be able to fly into low visibility and
IFR conditions then you will need a bigger venturi to run the Horizon.
Spend all te money you have on that one, it is probably the last money you
spend on that plane.

You should always know which side is up in a VFR Plane by looking out of
the window.
That way you are keeping your eye on traffic.
If you can't tell which side is up by looking outside, you are not flying
VFR anymore and your lifespan is artificially shortend.

new panel. Everthing not needed is comming out, like the verticle speed
indicator etc. I have a real nice artificial horizon and thought I'd put
it in instead of the turn and bank. Even though it is VFR only I like a
way to know which side is up if the need arises.
