Yes it needs to be done by a mechanic. Try and get one that will come to your place and let you do much of the work. That will be more fun, cheaper, and just an interesting experience. I think it could be done without removing the wings, and whenever mine finally gets recovered it will probably be that way. Yet it would be much better to remove them so that you can access everything more easily, plus it would be a great chance to replace bellcrank bearings, pushrods, work on gear struts, and inspect your center section. I have never removed my wings but it shouldn't be all that hard and any concern that you might find something bad hiding in there must be disregarded since what you don't know can sure hurt you.
