Hi Alan and fellow coupers,
I agree with Alan completely!!! I learned the hard way.
There is a gentleman (snicker-snicker) down here in my area who makes
his living working on
airplanes. After costing me a little over $3,000 for a job that I wasn't
happy with I got out my A/C
Logbooks and told him to just sign it off and leave my hangar.
That's when the other shoe fell....."I can't sign it off, I don't have
any kind of a license or
anything". (I was 'screwed', big time!) He told 'me' to go find an IA to
sign it off "if I wanted it
entered in my logbooks".
I said, "you mean you've cost me over $3,000 to make my airplane
'illegal' and now I can't fly it?
Either you give me my money back or I'll take you to court".
His reply was that if I said anything about it, in or out of court,
he'd counter-sue me for
defamation of character. His father was there also and he said he'd back
him financially. (Daddy has
money, so I could spend BIG bucks and even if (when) I win I'd be another
10K or so in debt.) So, how
can I win?
I ordered them off of my property and told them they were never to
return onto my "private" airport
again.
I asked three IA's if they'd sign it off for me and they all refused.
I don't blame them, they
didn't see the 'inside' of the job, only the finished product so why
should they put their reputaion and
license on the line? This was early summer of 1998 and I'm still not
flying!
I found another guy who has since redone my wings and we are now doing
a very intense annual on it
since it's been sitting for over two years. (The guy I'm using now can
only work on it one day a week so
it's taking a long time.) And get this, he's legal and he's only charging
me $1,000 (I supply the
materials) for his labor on the wings AND an annual. AND HE'S LEGAL!!!
My advice to everyone out there.....before you let ANYONE touch your
airplane, make sure he's
legitimate. Just because he does it for a living doesn't mean he's legal.
I aked an FAA 'person' (indirectly) what I can do to put this guy out
of business and he said he
wasn't breaking any laws as long as he didn't sign off anything stating
that he was an AP/IA.
Our friends, the feds. That's like saying it's okay to rob banks as
long as you don't get caught.
I guess I've 'cried' about this long enough, thanks for listening.
Sob, Sob.
(Golly gee whiz, I may have to take flying lessons again. Is flying like
riding a bicycle, you never
forget how?) OF COURSE IT IS!!! ( in a coupe) ; - )))))
