I renamed the Maildir directory and made a fresh one with maildirmake.

You are really out there on the bleeding edge. Intentionally, or not, you
are using a fairly advanced configuration.
:-(
What makes my configuration advanced?
I am just hosting a single, low traffic mail domain.. with just one user.
That's fine -- and it's good that someone besides myself is banging on this,
but these kinds of things are to be expected.
Well.. it was all find and great until my HD crashed. :(
The first thing you need to do is make sure that you're running the current
version of courier-imap.
The latest port available for FreeBSD is 4.0.6
I see there is a 4.1, but what would upgrading to that version do to help
troubleshoot?
if this is the current version, you'll just have to strace the process.
Will the server ever have more chatty logs as to more easily find problems
like this without having to strace? Wouldn't that approach be easier for
users?
