I like the juxtaposition a lot. The "mortification of flesh" angle is quite nice (I had to look the term up though :)). I think the fact that you cleanse others by killing them is enough to make it obviously nasty. It might be a bit puzzling, but as it does make sense in the end I think that's fine.
