Robert,

Just my humble opinion, but Honda never has and probably never will build a decent, fun-to-drive automatic tranny.  Their manual tranny's are just the opposite and set the standard everyone else measures their's against.  Does anyone else on the list drive a *shudder* automatic CRX?  Good, bad, or just plain ugly driving experience?

Robert,

I applaud your decision to go ahead with the head work.  Perhaps you can hang out when the work is being performed like I was able to during my engine swap.  It's amazing when the guy working on the engine runs into a little snag and you're right there to fill him in on the history.  If $600 is all it takes, that's a bargain- my brother had the head on his Maxima re-done years ago and he drove it for another six years+ (rust & other problems forced him to get rid of it).

The original plan called for me to yoink the head, taking it down to the machine shoppe to have them do whatever they needed (I thought about having the head rebuilt with all new valves, lifters, etc...) and then putting it back together.

Due to the holiday season (family and friend's visiting, etc...), I found that if I went this route, I would probably not get around to it until sometime in January at the earliest.  Which I guess is not a bad thing...

I've done my fair share of head gasket R&R's and this is the first time I've enlisted a shoppe to do it for me.  One positive in this is that it will have a limited warranty (where as in the past the only warranty I got was on the head gasket itself).

2001 Accord LX sounds, well, kinda nice.  Too bad it's not a 2003 Accord- now that's nice!!  Honda finally got some style back into the Accord's body design.  Also too bad the engine isn't the V6 since there's a Comptech kit for it at http://solar.innercite.com/comptech/sc_av6.html just aching to be bolted on.  Try this forum for Honda Accord stuff:

Thanks for the link.  We're not 100% sure we're going to keep the LX.  But like I said, it has very low miles (8K), it belongs to my folks (who as you can tell rarely drive it) who has it on a lease (which is up in about two years... the payment is very low - $200 a month).  For now it's a great loaner car while Jig's in the shoppe.  It's a great cruiser on the freeway (we went up to Santa Monica this past weekend), very good gas mileage and drives really smooth.

Even though it's a VTEC (SOHC), I feel that it's really underpowered.  At least with the automatic transmission.  When you jump on the throttle, there's a HUGE lag time before it kick down a gear to get the car going.  The best way to describe said sensation is when you go to jump on the throttle on a Turbo charged engine and you find that you don't have any boost.  :^P

Or is this just how the SOHC VTEC works?  I've only driven DOHC VTEC's with manual transmissions (in other CRX's, Civic's and Teg's).

Anyway... We looked at the EX's not too long ago (including the 2003 EX V6).  We're also looking at other cars too since we really need another car in which I can safely port the daughter around in (instead of using the Volvo all the time).
