Even though it's a VTEC (SOHC), I feel that it's really underpowered. At least with the automatic transmission. When you jump on the throttle, there's a HUGE lag time before it kick down a gear to get the car going. The best way to describe said sensation is when you go to jump on the throttle on a Turbo charged engine and you find that you don't have any boost. :^P
Or is this just how the SOHC VTEC works? I've only driven DOHC VTEC's with manual transmissions (in other CRX's, Civic's and Teg's).
As far as I know, VTEC switches to the performance lobes when the rpms reach an electronically set value. You have to spin the engine along with the entire auto trans up to the magic number before you get the power you needed in the first place--a Catch-22. I hear you can program VTEC to kick in at lower rpms, though.

Someone told me that I could stick the Zdyne or Jet ECU and re-program the engine. I just don't know if it's worth the investment since I'm not 100% that we're going to keep the car.
I would much rather spend the money on the suspension to help get rid of body roll. I also don't care for the bicycle wide tires (5.5 inch?). They work but I don't feel "connected" to the road.
As I had mentioned, it's just an LX so my overall expectations of the car is not very high. It's not a bad car... it just takes time to get use to and most importantly to remember that it's not a performance car.
Our Volvo is not a "performance" car but at least I feel connected to the road, there is very little body roll (which is due in part to the large front and rear anti-roll bars ~ it the AWD V70), the Turbo under the hood helps scoot this tank of a car down the road and the automatic transmission has a "sport" setting where it changes the shift points.
FWIW, last night my wife was asking if we were to keep the LX, would I "fix it up". :^)
