Dear Java Mad,

I am just starting my honours degree in ComSci at UCT; no they didn't ever teach us HTML or any scripting language as part of our 3 year undergraduate degree, but yes, they expected us to use them. As for AWT and Swing, we got about a week of teaching on them in first year, and since then we have had to use them in various projects. All the other web-based stuff, well, we spent about six weeks on the theory, and then had to do a (admittedly small) project that put it all into practise.

The point of a Comsci degree does not appear to be to learn about technologies. It instead seems to be "learning how to learn". I don't think there is anyone who graduated with me last year who does not know how to program; but we would (will) all have to spend some time getting to our feet in the marketplace. Give them two months to get to grips with the things they haven't seen before, and the skills they learned at University will prove far more useful than having spent three years boning up on the super-practical stuff you are talking about.

Java Mad I'm not sure where you get your information.

I am a ComSci graduate from University of Pretoria (end 2001) and I am
actively programming in Java and have been since mid 2002.

At Uni we were exposed to Theory (Design, AI, UML, SDLC etc. etc.),
practical application (Java, C++, HTML, Delphi, _javascript_, even a
little Assembler) to varying degrees. Even discrete methematics and
physics if that turned you on. But if you couldn't do the practical
application you couldn't pass.

I admit that I haven't studied at a Tech so I cant make any comment on
which is better ? How are you able to make your comparison?

What I did find anoying about Uni was the fact that there is 'padding'
in the sense that a student can select unrelated subjects such as
'Discovering the Universe' in order to make up the necessary credits
for the degree - I would have preferred more ComSci related subjects.

When I started working I took what I could get (originally Delphi) and
while I agree that it is difficult to find a job I did not moan and
complain or expect handouts. I studied extra Java courses and completed
the SCJP (both to improve my Java knowledge and to make my CV more
attractive) - then moved to
