David - that screen size does sound awesome - Dell's site does not list and Inspiron 9300 (old stock I assume) but the Inspiron 1720 has the same size screen and looks like an excellent option. I'm also leaning towards using Ubuntu even though my Linux knowledge is non- existent beyond the odd "ls -la" command.
Soren - I hadn't even thought about heat as an issue - probably won't affect me here in Cape Town...WXGA, UXGA, SXGA are all new terms to me..but thanks for bringing it up - best I get familiar. Heinz - What are the implications on the warranty if "non-Dell" supplied/installed RAM is installed? Does it not void the service plan? I'm not really too keen on the Mac option to be quite honest.
