Bruce,

there is a little flap at the bottom of your notebook that you open and 
swap out the RAM.  Very easy procedure.  I do not think it would void 
any warranty either.  If you have problems with your laptop, you can 
always swap the DELL RAM back again.

Just make sure that you disconnect your laptop from the power source and 
remove all your batteries before opening it up.

Heat should not really be a problem in Cape Town.  It might be the Linux 
version that was causing the problems.  If it works on the beach in 
Crete at 32 degrees, then you should have no problems at all :-))

The Inspiron range is almost the same as the Latitude range, but Dell 
keep parts for Latitude longer (I believe 5 years or so).  The Inspiron 
is supposed to be mostly for private users, whereas the Latitude is 
aimed at the professional.  However, as I said, they are mostly the same 
machine so pick whatever works best for you.
