I use gdm as the login manager- it has a lot of (mostly unused)  
dependencies, but a really useful bunch of features (such as auto- 
login). If you're trying to stay light on the hd space, xdm should be  
good enough.

As for configuration, look at various xfce4 themes as well as
~.config/xfce4/xinitrc

Do you need to allow the users to shutdown? There's a FAQ answer
