Not that I am aware of.

The reason I would suggest the deb package over a shell-script is  
error-handling- your shell-script may need lots of it. Dependency and  
version-tracking are built-in to deb packages. Plus, apt-get upgrade  
could nuke your changes. Still, if your changes are on the order of a  
couple config file changes, then it would probably be easiest to  
maintain the shell script.
