No- part of gdm runs as root and controls X access. When the user  
logs out, it presents the login dialog again.

xdm doesn't have auto-login, you would have to start it as part of an  
su script...

I wasn't able to find documentation on where the item is added in the  
config file- I would imagine it is somewhere in ~./config/xfce4. Sorry.
