HDD space isn't so much of a concern as RAM.  I assume gdm runs only  
during login.  As soon as one logs in, it disappears, freeing up its  
RAM.  Is that a safe assumption?  If so, then gdm would be nice.

Yes.  These machines will be mostly single user systems.  So,  
shutdown and auto-login is a nice "feature"

Nice.  One thing I do need is a way to easily adjust the font size in  
an xterm.  The default font with xterm is microscopic, at least for  
my eyes.

I seem to remember seeing a very WindowsXP-like theme for xfce, but  
didn't see it there nor did a quick google turn it up.

Install FireFox and then add it to the menu and panel.
