It sounds like xdm just started X but failed its own initialization-  
xdm should present a simple authentication window. X will quit if  
there is nothing for it to do. Check the logs for xdm messages.

I would recommend this instead if HD space isn't an issue. Plus, it  
will pull in most of the dependencies so that the users can run gnome  
apps.
