A Reflection on Today's Scripture:
All over the world, scenes of atrocities are visited and commemorated
by women -- mothers, wives, and sisters. Like Rachel, mourning for
her children, their tears ascend to heaven. No wonder that the Levite
mother of Moses set him afloat in a basket, beseeching Divine
Providence to save him. And a loving God, using Pharaoh's daughter as
His instrument, delivered the child back to her for nursing!
Countless mothers in our world cry in vain as they watch their
children starving and dying, or abused and neglected, or actually
murdered in front of their eyes. Last Sunday's Gospel showed us God
as a nursing mother. We must pray that God's maternal instincts will
hear the prayers of mothers everywhere as hostilities escalate in
Northern Ireland and Palestine. Are we, too, under a worse
condemnation than Sodom and Gomorrah? Only prayer and sacrifice,
tears and evangelizing can repair a God so offended.
