A Reflection on Today's Scripture:
Tuesday of Advent
"It is not the Will of My Father that One of these Little Ones Should
Perish" (Matt 18:14)
If there are ninety-nine in the field and one goes astray, won't the
good shepherd go looking for the one who is lost? The answer is, of
course, yes. But how does Jesus go about this today?
First, there is the work of the Holy Spirit that gradually convicts
anyone of good will of the deep and abiding presence of God. But the
Holy Spirit engages us in the process of the conversion of every
person. In a mystical way, our presence in the life of one just
beginning to believe is an "advent" of Jesus Christ. We are called
upon to evangelize both in words and in actions. We are called to
help the believer see Jesus Christ.
These words of Jesus are a kind of command. He is telling us, rather
directly, that it is His will that we work to bring the knowledge of
His advent to the whole world. This is a somber and all-encompassing
command to us. We are invited to be the ones who introduce new
believers to Jesus. What could be more wonderful?
