A reflection on today's Scripture
The Daughter of Jairus
Mark is the condensed gospel. Everything is a swirl of action from
the moment we see John the Baptist until the Resurrection. Incident
is packed on incident. The word immediately appears a great many
times -- in fact it is the connector between nearly all the
incidents. Here we start with Jairus, our attention is diverted by
the woman with an issue of blood, and we return to Jairus all in a
very short space.
But let's consider Jairus. We are told that he is one of the leaders
of the synagogue. He was likely to be someone who would have
considered Jesus a danger to his faith and to the people around him.
And yet...
Driven by love, by concern for his daughter, Jairus abandons every
consideration. He abandons his position in the synagogue and goes to
find Jesus. He dismisses everyone who tells him about his dead
daughter and Jesus says to him simply, "Do not fear, only believe."
And there we have it -- our injunction. Do not fear, only believe.
Believe and all will be well. Jesus has it under control. We need to
abandon ourselves to God. We need to turn to Him, to trust Him, and
to give all to Him. Jairus gave everything he was and even gave his
daughter to Jesus. Jesus raised her -- a sign to all of us to hope
and to give everything over to Him.
