I guess this is the solution I was proposing. It's really sad if this
is not possible and to be honest I'm not really sure what solution I'm
proposing.

One option is of course for Thunderbird to fork, and maybe rejoin once
the build changes have settled.

If thunderbird doesn't have the cycles to keep up with build system
changes, it seems even less realistic to keep up with XUL going away.
