I think what would help is some success stories to share - we had some good
experiences with GSOD last year in Apache Airflow and that's why we were
very interested in participating (and we have two interns now from
Outreachy starting the work). So I hope we can share some of it once
the internships conclude.

I generally think the key is to share it in more diverse channels than just
sending emails. Some more intense campaigns with the involvement of past
interns and mentors going via multiple available channels and getting
the word out to not only PMCs but also to committers might help with that.
I think often some of the PMCs (this is the case for Apache Airflow) - are
not really deeply involved in the project on a daily basis and simply scan
the emails for the most important topics.Together With Kaxil - another PMC
from Airflow - we are co-mentoring two interns now, but we are both not
only PMCs but also one of the most active committers on the project. PMCs
who are a bit disonnected, can very easily miss such messages.

I tried to do some of that for our own efforts and here are the things we
did/will do, but maybe a more coordinated effort is needed to get the word
out ? I am happy to help with some of the capacity I have :).

* So far I also shared our diversity/being welcoming in the "Success at
Apache" blog
https://blogs.apache.org/foundation/entry/success-at-apache-welcoming-communities
* We are going to have at least few talks about diversity at the upcoming
Onine Aifrflow Summit https://airflowsummit.org/
* We actually introduced our interns (with their permission) and the
project they will be working on at our NYC Airflow Meetup we held more than
a week ago. You can see it https://youtu.be/znowFIBK1lk?t=1252

There are few other ways to get the word out - social media (different
projects have them), podcasts, meetups, conferences. blogs , feathercast
.... I think it needs a bit of effort to engage people from various
projects and find out the best way to reach out, but I generally think
quite a bit of ground-work is needed to have people associate "Outreachy"
with "It is great for my project".

I hope in a few months we will be able to share some success stories that
could be part of this ground-work. Happy to help with that!
