I was trying to use PuTTY. The instructions say:
Start the application.
At the prompt, enter "ssh -2 -x -L 2401:localhost:2401
[EMAIL PROTECTED]"

But when I start PuTTY, there is no prompt, and I don't know how to
get one. I only have a Configuration window. I tried following the
instructions giving in the links on the OOo website, but at some
point they told me to > fill in some specific information that I
didn't have (or didn't recognise if I did have it).

Go to Connection > SSH > Auth, add your private key there (in PuTTy's
format), then go to Connection > SSH > Tunnel, add source port 2401, destination
localhost:2401

Don't forget to set your auto-login username to tunnel in the
Connection tab

So I should try to use that instead of PuTTY? Bah, yet another
bloody piece of software to cope with.

nope, you can still use PuTTY
