I'm sorry to say that I had a lot of trouble following your explanation, starting with
> set "ssh protocol version 2" (mark the optionbox)

I have no clue where that goes, even after looking at the documentation you referred me to, which appears to have been written for a different (earlier?) version of PuTTY, because in several cases I can't find anything in the PuTTY Configuration that corresponds to what the instructions say. However, it may not be relevant, because Willy's instructions appear to have got me through to the OOo server -- where it didn't accept the password for my key. I suppose that is progress of sorts....

That leaves out huge numbers of potential users, both those who don't use Linux/Unix at all and those who are not "confident" using them. But I understand that Ian Lynch is not exactly a naive Linux user, and he has problems.

It's more than missing info. The info in the instructions is not provided in a way that I (and many others) understand, and the instructions are not organised in an unambiguous way (see previous discussion about sections out of logical order).

Reality check:
So the user has to learn "Putty" ...
Compared to that just launching cygwin and pasting the command
into the window is a big barrier?

You don't have to "learn cygwin". Only install it, run it, and paste the
command

I recall having a problem finding and installing it, but I forget just what the problem was. I may be misremembering, but I think it was in a huge package with a bunch of other stuff. Scott had told me what to download but the filenames didn't all correspond to what he said, so I downloaded the whole package of stuff. (Fortunately I was on high speed at the time.) I'll try running it and see what happens and report back.

Daniel : If you have fast connection, why don't you try to download and use
Cygwin? It's quite easy to install and setup
You only need to download the openSSH and CVS package (besides the
base-files) and off you to make your tunnel away

You can contact me if you have problem with Cygwin

Uh, isn't Cygwin for Windows? Daniel's not using Windows. See above about a problem I had when downloading it. I'll try using it when I get a chance. But I've already got a key produced by PuTTY, and that may be the next stumbling block (see a different note on that topic).
