I'm pretty familiar with how it works now, so if there is a document
we'd like to try it on (before the API Guide is moved to the Wiki), I
can help out with the implementation.

How about the Getting Started guide?
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Getting_Started

Seems like a good place start. I can put together a top level TOC, and at least one chapter TOC this morning (CET time).

If I look at the first chapter of that document (What is OpenOffice.org), it is a long page. With the TOC template, that long page could be split into at least 11 individual pages, and the topic navigation moved from the autoTOC that MediaWiki provides, over to the custom TOC.

The same could be applied to the rest of the chapters as it is moved to the TOC template.

Just to note, the MediaWiki engine will need a tweak here and there to make things work on properly all pages in all documents for people still using Internet Explorer for their browser. I will work on getting that done as soon as I can :-) In the meantime it does work in IE... but there are some minor layout issues... for example, when there is a code box near the TOC, the code box text extends into the TOC (fixed by adding some code to the css), and long chapter/heading titles in the TOC are not wrapped properly in IE (also fixed by changing the CSS).
