I agree that per-segment sorting may improve compression, but I don't see how
it can help with early termination. If Lucene allowed you to terminate on a
per-segment basis then maybe, but today (as far as I know), the only way to
early terminate a query is by throwing an exception and catching it outside,
right?
At any rate, per-segment sorting doesn't help much when segments are merged,
because then you lose sorting again. Unless, we add some API to IW /
SegmentMerger for you to control how the segments are merged...
