YES! I couldn't agree more. That face to face contact is invaluable. It is precisely what permits cross plination of ideas between projects. It is what gave us our agreement with the Mozilla Foundation to start selling CDROMs with OOo on it. There's so much energy at these confs I think they are an invaluable component of OOo outreach.
