Reading lists in Japanese, French and English, the only thing I can see is that end users are extremely satisfied by the the work achieved by the NeoOffice team to bring OOo to par with other native (or close) OSX applications.

I agree. But it would be better firstly to get the base of both office implementations bug free. Instead of getting 1.1.x codebase more Mac-like the OOo 2.0 is much more important because it will be the base for next releases also of NeoOffice/J.

That's Sun's opinion. And as Oscar wrote, there are only 2.5 people working on NO. Considering the problem from the user's side, It is clear that removing X11 dependancy from the code should be considered a priority. X11 is an anomaly in the OSX world. OSX development does not happen on the X11 base. X11 is only here to give access to legacy applications.

If Sun thinks providing what looks like legacy applications on OSX is an option, it is very possible that OSX users will not show much interest in OOo.

Why can't Sun take the responsibility of working on removing X11 dependancy and still keep a portable code base ?

I do automated QA in my private time for both implementations but it would be much easier to have one office and one team to speak with....

Are there practical ways to reach that point today ?
