Y'know, some of the list members are pretty silly.
We had these same concerns and I must say, I think we've had two
non-serious form fill-outs in 2 months. We use Bank of America eStores
and they do a fair-ish job of verifying address and letting you set
sensitivities. However, if a bank doesn't participate in that program,
then you get a 0-no match. My jury is out on that.
As far as OpenSRS/Tucows goes, they are wonderful. I haven't had a domain
pay go bad yet, so I can't say how they are with that. However I've never
waited more than 6 hours for support of any kind.
(Pardon me, I need to wipe my nose off...)
My feeling is that we are talking about $10 for a reg credit unit.
<<shrug>>?
Domain admin can certainly be held back. Domain registration can be held
in a queue until payment is secured. Pretty standard approach.
As I've said, I've had no problems (knock wood). Keep in mind that a lot of
what you see are
trolls by small potatoes, newly accredited registrars trying to horn
in on OpenSRS' resellers. Their utter lack of professionalism and decorum
makes them fairly easy to spot after a while. Remember <G>, TYPE does not
make FACT.
I feel an element of Tucows/OpenSRS' equity that is rarely discussed is
their
recognition and respect/goodwill built up over years in the industry. I
prominently
disply "OpenSRS reseller" on my page because people respond to that.
Trying to portray myself as a registrar is unnecessary (and kinda stupid).
So, that's part of the value of the system as well.
Don't fight the force Moo-ke (hmmmm, I see a Darth Bovine Flash scene...)
Just my $0.02, your results may vary.

We are about to start reselling domain names through OpenSRS,
but are afraid of credit card fraud and charge-backs.
Tucows, do you have numbers on this,
by how much should we increase our price to cover these costs ?
What recommendations can be made to lower the risk ?
May domain administration passwords be held back
until the credit card charge has been approved ?
