Read my draft letter, I think it is more accurately describing it.
Those customers entrusted their ISP/IPP to manage the domain
registration service for them, and that included selecting a supplier.
They may not have been explicitly aware of the details, but then, they
didn't have to be.  That's what they contract their provider to do for
them.
