It seems pretty clear the names are being transferred directly, and not
being deleted or released to the general public (all one would need to
do is watch the WHOIS on a few names, and see what happens, such as on
MAXI.org).

What's short-sighted about this is that NSI can do exactly what you are
doing, if it's legal and end the drops entirely. Even now they seem to
be doing drops only once or twice a month, with some names having
expiration dates 2 years ago.

By not releasing the names, OpenSRS is also competing directly with its
own customers. I don't have as many names as UltSearch, DomainDeluxe,
HostStart or other big players, and can't do the same deals they can.
But, the names belong to the namespace, not the registrars. Thus, any
such deals should be prohibited. What if 1 day after voice.com or
beijing.com or other top names expired, NSI said "We plan to keep them
for ourselves"? In a roundabout way, Tucows/OpenSRS is doing the exact
same thing. This is hypocritical given the prior public OpenSRS
position with respect to NSI drops.

Sincerely,
