I agree that virtual communication can be just as important and engaging and f2f.. but the way I see this issue doesn't really have much to do with the mode of communication. Starting up an email/im/text conversation while having a f2f conversation with somebody is rude in the same way as leaving an in person conversation mid sentence to talk to somebody else...
The heart of the issue is that if you're engaged in a conversation with somebody (or a group of people) you should be -engaged- in that conversation...
