There must be other metrics to judge them on. McDonalds has served billions and billions of burgers. They are still arguably the most disgusting, unhealthy, hormone laden fat patties guarenteed to kill you around - but they are cheap and ubiquitous. Google is the most useless search engine ever invented for true research and scholarship - but everyone except the north korean's use it. I won't eat McD burgers, I won't, unless forced, use Google for real search, and I won't use GD for registration or hosting.
