Daniel, Persuasion is really about convincing people to take an action (or to avoid taking an action). In marketing terms the measure of success of persuasive techniques is the number of products sold. I would assume that you would already know what the "core value" of a product is before you sell it. On the other hand the goal of your persuasive technique could be to get people to try a new product prototype, to find out what its "core value" is.
To your other question, yes persuasion is easier if you are already using the product, which is why companies spend so much time tweaking their brand and building a loyal customer base.
