I have much more experience with SQL server and mySQL than Postgres, but I've been using Postgres more and more in the last year or so (and like it). I think the functionality between SQL Server and Postgres is very similar, but for someone with no experience with either, and likely little experience with Windows or Unix administration, SQL server is by far easier to get going. While it may not be ideal, they can just about click 'next' at every stage of the install. For postgres, you really need to make some system changes just to get the database going. Given that the process is eased if you can use the package that comes with your distribution (RedHat, Debian, etc.).
