You might as well ask "which is better, linux or unix?" or Little Endians or Big Endians. People throw rocks on both sides; it's religion, and honestly, both sides are fine. I suppose that you could call it religion (I understand that it really is not a religion and that it speaks to how people are about their favorites) but this does describe how us humans act when we like and support something, i.e. Apple vs Windows PCs or Politics - Republican vs Democrats, etc. .... Major applications run on mysql. Major applications run on postgres. Tiny apps run on both too. (if you haven't already seen the correction - it is M$ SQL Server) You make a good point here. But aren't some DB Engines better than others for specific industries or types of applications for various reasons or has it gotten to the point that it is just a matter of the choice of the person who is going to develop the application and that is all that matters ? There's a trend for people to more often distribute small applications on mysql and big ones on postgres, but that is seriously, very much irrelevant.
