To: "Harvey Rothenberg" <[email protected]> Cc: "LOPSA Discuss List" <[email protected]> Date: Friday, March 22, 2013, 6:32 PM For a novice who has to support this? 100% MS SQL. The community and availability of support is orders of magnitude larger than postgres. You will also be able to find another novice administrator to support it after this one levels up and/or moves on. Let me provide a bit more info about this environment, It is in the public sector where IT and DBA support are not the norm. The workers who are more technically capable are the ones who become the persons responsible. Sort of like a mid to small size firm that picks a secretary or some other worker who shows understanding of PCs (but not at the level of a person who has taken the Comptia's A+ exam). This is the typical environment in which this application is being installed and run within. I hope that this clears things up. Out of the box, MS SQL is simpler to install and configure than Oracle. So let me ask you now, with this added info, do you still fell that this should be the choice ? I really appreciate all of the responses that I have received, so far. It has helped me to view this situation from other aspects. So again, does this change your advise ? I look forward to the list's and your responses. Could you equate SQL Server to Oracle in their flexiblity/complexity or is PostGres more challenging ? I am looking from the piont-of-view of a computer novice who has to select one of these DB Engines that is supported by a needed application program install. I seek this information in-order to help a friend because I already have several years experience in selecting and supporting programs. But to help this friend, I seek others advise, so that I am helping from a more current view point and one that is not necessarily mine. I know that I will probably learn a bit from this inquiry. Your experience and advise will be appreciated.
