If you are using the volume control spdif output is also affected. I *think* that the output is formatted as 24 bit all the time but the actual bit depht of the signal will vary with volume. The volume works also for digital signals.
There are some settings under settings > player > audio (from drop down list) but the spdif is always on when the player is on. There is a setting to turn off outputs when player is off. And you should try with the volume controll "fixed" to see if thats an issue also turn of volume adjustment. Otherwise it should work ?
