Not to start a discussion of the virtues of spending big $$$s on digital
cables... (please, it's been done already - (an interesting discussion
on digital technology and jitter - if you care to search for it))

However, it sounds like you are going out to buy another digital cable
just to see if it works. If you are going to connect the
electrical/digital output then any RCA audio cable will work. You could
even unplug the analog cable (Both ends! Do not do something silly like
feed your digital output into your analog amp!) you are using now and
try it.

As for the optical cable, if you can see red light at the far end (other
end plugged into the SB3) then its fine. Were're not using an inferred
laser crammed with a thousand phone calls (i.e. shouldn't hurt your eyes
- but if you are worried, shine it on your finger, there should be
plenty of light ). Now, when you plug into your HTPC make sure you are
using an INPUT. Aside from reading any labels, if the port on the PC is
lit up red it is obviously an output.

I agree with the other posters w.r.t. your Home Theatre Personal
Computer setup. It's more likely you have a configuration problem on
your PC.

Good luck.
