I've already read enough about cables thanks ;-) I have a very good supplier when it comes to cables who will quite hapilly let me have one to try so no problems there. It's actually a TOSLink I'm after as I have already tried alternatives on the RCA SPDIF.
After further investigation on the HTPC side it looks like I am unlikely to get this working. My sound card is part of the motherboard and runs a Realtek ALC 855 HD Azalia chip. The design spec from Realtek lists this as SPDIF in and out but the Motherboard manufacturer (DFI) lists it as SPDIF output only. I'm now off to do a little research on this.
