All outputs are active simultaneously and they are all synchronized to each other. S/PDIF is active (outputting digital silence) even when you are not playing music.
If you have played music successfully from SB3's analog outputs, then it's extremely unlikely that your problem is with its digital output signal. Try a different cable, and try optical instead of coax if possible.
