Not suggesting user error here, but owning an SB since '95 would be a nice trick since the first player (the SliMP3) was introduced in 2001. ;o)
I have also found that RG and SG work fine for me. So I don't think that it's outrageous that MC suggests the original files may have gotten messed up. Do you have any of those problematic MP3s on CD? If so, I would re-rip with good software like EAC or dBpoweramp, using their RG facilities, and compare the RG values they produce with the values in the file you have. They should be very close. If they're not, then I'd certainly trust the freshly ripped ones instead of the older ones.
