As soon as we say, "Here's our lesson, we're devoting half a day to this," we create the expectation that learners ought to be able to get through all the material in that time; if they don't, they feel like they've fallen short. This has come up in feedback from a couple of recent workshops, which is why I'm in favor of culling material (moving stuff to shell-extras, for example). Doing a better job of collecting timing info from instructors would also help, but we've been saying that for a while...
