All

I am a long time user of SME and have seen many attempts to get things rolling properly over the years. And saddly have to admit to not giving enough of my time.

Having read all of the threads so far and having taken the time to think things through I would like to say the following.

1. SME as a community seems to struggle to get anything done as we do
not seem have any structure or road map to follow.
2. We need to set in place a decent structure that allows for the
   future development of SME.
3. We need to clearly understand where we are currently and what
   resources we have.

As such is it possible to get answers to the following questions so we can start moving forward. (To a new ISO based on Centos 6)

1. What is the current structure of SME/Contribs.org?
    1. Who hosts SME/Contribs?
    2. Who pays the bills or is everything currently running on donated
       equipment etc?
    3. Who has the cheque book if there is one?
    4. Does SME/Contribs have any available funds?
    5. How many people do we have available to donate development time?
    6. How many people do we have available to donate Bug Fixing time?
    7. How many people do we have available to donate Documentation time?
    8. What structure do we need in place (lets apply the KISS
principle to this) so that we can support the developers to
       develop etc

I have not tried to make this list long but from my point of view in order to get things rolling we need to know where we are and then a plan that allows everyone to feel included (if they want to be) and a project plan to get the next release out.

I agree that timelines are useless for projects like this as everyone has work and personnel lives that require there expertise and time.

If we can form a consensus of where we are and where we want to be I am happy to be part of a working team to put something down on paper to form a road map to the next release. The question for me is how to we accomplish this?

I thank you all for your time especially those like Charlie and Shad etc who have kept this distro rolling forward as without you all we would not have the wonderful distro that is SME.

Thanks

Tony

Well I'll stick my head up above the parapet on this one. I'm not a
developer, but I do run a (small) business. I'd be happy to give up time
to help out with the more mundane 'management crap'.

(Don't panic, I deliberately avoided using the word 'volunteer' :-))
Deleting everything to do with the failed board and related documents
would be a good start (or, better, move them to a "do not repeat" area).

Jeez, whatever you do round here, DON'T volunteer ;-) Court martial
offence. You will be first against the wall.
No! People should volunteer and they should do things. But don't
volunteer others to do things.
That was never the suggestion AFAIAW ????

I have to say that I think that the 'management' could do with a little
business orientated assistance for planning etc. Give the developers the
time to do what they do best.

I still say that there should be a road map. Hsing-Foo was right.
A roadmap is good but timelines are meaningless without people doing the
work. This is where Hsing-Foo was quite wrong. You can't put out a
release timetable without any concept of effort or available people hours.

But it's up to the developers to then say what is realistic for time
frames etc.
Indeed and I said as much. You need a plan, and the developers to
suggest a 'potential' timetable, all subject to change. but you HAVE to
start somewhere....

And this is likely a major issue. As far as I can tell, all of the
people who put the major development work into SME7/SME8 are unable to
commit significant time. I am one of those.

Perhaps the first thing to do is assess how many hours people can offer.
Of course that can't be guaranteed, but much of this does scale by the
number of people doing things.

Indeed, and Hsing-Foo suggested asking for volunteers as per the quote
above, but was promptly shot down in flames. (a common theme round her
unfortunately)

Have you another suggestion ????

Seems to me as I first stated, this is a chicken and egg situation.
Where do we start, cos currently we have got nowhere.....
