I feel that making the data public is likely to open legal can of worms.

*BUT* it would depend on what data was public and how it was presented. A 
list of servers giving the number of active installations and version per 
country should be pretty safe but a map you can zoom in on and find an 
individual servers location, even very loosely, I really don't like at all.

Publically I feel wee need to keep to broad, generic, stats and nothing 
about a servers mode, config or installed contribs.
