Parts of it can still be read (in fact, usually enough to boot the old Kubuntu system that was installed on it), but it generates I/O errors like there's no tomorrow. The new system was planned to be installed on a DoK, from the get- go. However, apparently the installer tried to access the disk (perhaps a swap partition; in the default install, this happened in the "detect network hardware" phase) and this made it freeze. Taking the faulty disk out of the laptop, physically, solved the problem.
