The "something like SRS" suggestion would address that issue. A unique From 
would be assigned to each message/to each recipient.  The MLM could then relay 
messages sent to such an address back to the original sender and not to the 
list. 

It's not simple, but I think it would allow mailing list functionality to be 
largely as it is now.
