BTW, GNOME will most probably not work anyway without systemd, and I

gnome as a desktop may be absent but gnome is very much entwined with De(bia/vua)n. In setting up ascii for really important things :D , I discovered that Aisleriot overrides my mouse icon choice of DMZ (white) and forces use of the Adwaita icon theme within the game. So I tried to uninstall adwaita and it wanted to take most of the desktop with it. So much for user choice in Gnomeland. For the moment I have gotten around this by renaming the theme adwaita.old and the DMZ theme was restored. Hopefully that won't break other things. So in effect gnome is equally as entwined with the desktop as systemd and would be equally as challenging to remove. I filed a bug report with Debian but don't expect anything to change.
