Hi Ian, There has been much debate over correct tension of the engine bracing cables. Keeping in mind that the engine is supported on four rubber mounts, excessive tension on these cables can cause unwanted loads in these mounts as well as change the incidence line of the engine. They should be tightened sufficiently to remove any slack, but not so much that the mounts are loaded by the cable tension; "snugged" is a good descriptive term. Check the tension regularly & if found loose have a good look at the engine mounts: we have had several cases of sheared and partially sheared engine mounts & they are not all that easy to inspect. Another cause of looseness can be due to rotation of the angle bracket where the turnbuckle is attached at the firewall. I could not keep the left side bracket in place so have tig welded it to the rear carrier to stop it rotating on the bolt. Also watch for contact between the cables & exhaust components which can lead to abrasion and cable failure. Slight repositioning of the rear bracket can help with this problem too. Modern engine inhibiting oils do not require flushing before refilling with your preferred engine oil; in fact you can quite safely run the engine up to normal temperature on the inhibiting oil to assist oil draining. Couple of quick queries for you. The crossed bracing cables (with turnbuckles) under the engine. Do these need to be tensioned or just 'snugged up'? My engine was drained and filled with inhibiting oil before leaving Europe. When I drain this, does the engine need flushing ( and if so, what with) before filling with regular oil? Cheers, Neville.
