I wouldn't call the current mail notifications "fine". "Abomination" would be more like it. :) You _have_ to open every single mail only to realize that it's about a discussion you're not interested in. There don't seem to be any line breaks in what is shown and there isn't even a plain text part. But probably we just have a different idea of "fine".
