It wasn't installed just now, no.  It may have been installed previously
and then removed.  At least that's my understanding but I could be wrong
since I understood K?Ubuntu uses ALSA for talking to the sound hardware
and Pulse to sit above it as a sound server, so you'd think you'd have
already had it installed.

Sorry, don't know.  I guess you've tried switching the `preferred' to
Alsa?

Well, things *may* not get worse.  :-(

I've never struggled with getting sound working too much, so I'm about
out of ideas.
